Hi there!
I wanted to share this list I made for students entering any carpentry/cosntrcution/renovation programs at George Brown this year. The list is more or less done but I'll be adding to it and keeping it up to date throiughout the year. I'll do a refresh at the start of each semester.
Anti-fog is where it’s at, especially if you’re wearing a mask/respirator.
The Kenton line is very comfortable and looks great too. Pro tip: get a pair of padded or gel insoles from the dollar store or amazon.
Carpenters, plumbers, electricians you’ll want something that is comfortable in all positions - standing, kneeling, on ladders. The sneaker-style shoes (low cut) are ideal.
Welders, look at the higher “boot” style - you don’t want any sparks going down into your shoes. Make sure they are well padded, you’re likely standing in one spot.
The Milwaukee ratcheting system is very convenient and comfortable.
You may or may not be allowed music/audio capable hearing protection.
Check out isotunes for in-ear hearing protection with Bluetooth.
If you can afford, buy a 3M half-face respirator and P100 filters.
They are much more comfortable and are reusable (but costly). Any generic N95 mask should suffice and are significantly cheaper.
Technically you are required to wear long pants, but teachers don’t really care so shorts vs pants boils down to personal preference, just avoid super tight or super loose.
If you’re in welding you’d definitely want to wear pants - avoid synthetics that will burn easily (looking at you polyester). Denim, leather and cordura all seem to be popular options.
Avoid tape measures with metric and imperial on the same tape. You don't need metric.
The milwaukee 2 pk comes with a mini square which is SUPER nice to have.
The hultafors/pica are much better than the standard carpenter's pencil.
